Ten to twenty years ago i had a bloodhound, i was a beater and a blood tracker. Now i do sometime beating. I'm a deerhound breeder too, kennel Lilac Wind. Sorry my english is not very good. Deerhound are wonderful, with a great behaviour and nature, but i am sorry to say they loose ability to hunt because fading physical performance. I do running (every day 10 to 25km) and mountain bike (every week 30 to 80km) with friends which own greyhounds, afghans and salukis, i can say modern deerhound showline are in decline. I can let my mâles running after deers (singly), because they can't reach the prey and they return to me after 2 or 3 minutes. But never let the females, they are also unable to reach a deer when they're alone but females are more stubborn and follow the prey 15 minutes to several hours, it's dangerous in our country with roads and forbidden. The other danger for my deerhounds are wild boar, my sighthounds can easily reach them but after deerhounds can be injured. So my deerhounds are very obedient, when i say "No" they stay close to me, this another fabulous quality of this breed. In the past i had an Azawakh sighthound, and this dog, alone, was able to catch and kill roe deer, reach and injure deer. I was impossible to let this fabulous hunter without lead. Salukis and greyhounds are very tough, afghans and deerhounds not. Trotting over 20 km (speed 15 to 25 km/h) is difficult and the following day they are not very supple. Salukis are the best about combination speed/endurance. My bloodhound was better than my deerhounds, he was able to run every days 20 km under 45 minutes. I think deerhounds are better when size is not too high, under 80cm for male and 75 cm for females. Modern show-type with a lot of weight in front part and a ridiculous tiny croup and back isn't good for running in the hill. My ideal is a deerhound around 75cm, 40/45 kg, with a lot of substance in loin, croup and thighs. I plan to cross my showline with kangaroo-sighthound, coyote-sighthound or lurcher. I also plan a cross with French Poitevin (sort of fox-hound with a part of greyhound blood) to ameliorate stamina and endurance, Poitevin can galoping several hours over 35 km/h and are great specialist of deerhunting. Problem is to affect the fabulous temperament of the deerhound. I am coming on this forum to get information, advice, and, why not help, to this breeding plan. Icing on the cake, over trying to ameliorated modern-deerhound performances, i hope to re-created fawn colour. Now you know who i am and what i expect in being here.
